As the weather gets colder, there’s nothing I want more than to curl up like a burrito by the fireplace with a steaming mug of fresh hot cocoa. I’m sure a lot of you agree with me.
I love hot cocoa. I can’t be trusted around it.
Unfortunately, the instant hot chocolate packets just don’t do it for me anymore. But the good thing is that making hot chocolate from scratch is super easy and almost as fast as the instant variety! So if Swiss Miss is your idea of delicious hot chocolate for a chilly winter morning, then by all means, you go enjoy that Swiss Miss. I’ll stick to this one however. 🙂
The best part is it’s super easy, requires little to no effort or ingredients, and anyone with any range of cooking skills can effectively whip this up in ten minutes or less! I promise you’ll taste the difference when you try making it from scratch. And, bonus: you can do this with nearly any flavor combination you want. Not a fan of salted caramel? Fine, switch out the caramel and sea salt for peanut butter and powdered sugar, or coffee, or orange zest; or replace some of the chocolate with a flavored Hershey’s kiss or Dove chocolate – whatever you want!
Start by heating up equal parts milk and half and half. Once it’s all warm and cozy, dump in some chocolate chips and heat up the mixture till they’re all melted.
Yum! Once that’s all chocolatey and melty, stir in your caramel sauce and a pinch of sea salt. If caramel’s not your thing, use whatever flavoring you want! The world (or, rather, this basic hot chocolate recipe) is your oyster!
I used Smucker’s Caramel Ice Cream Topping because that’s what I had on hand.
And it’s ready! Does it really get any easier than that?! Pour it into your cup…
Look! A heart!
The hot chocolate stole my heart! Isn’t that heart-warming? (Too corny? Okay, I’ll stop. I’m sorry.)
P.S. – Isn’t my glass mug so cute? 😀 I’d been looking for a little glass teacup-mug-something for ages, and finally found one at Dollar Tree, of all the places!
Go on. Smother that bad boy with whipped cream. You know you want to. (Alternatively, you could use marshmallows. Both are delicious.)
And toss some mini chocolate chips on top, just for good measure.
Look at that yumminess. ❤ _ ❤ (Feel free to eat off the top with a spoon and then redo the whole thing because you forgot to take pictures. Not that that’s what I did or anything.)
Too many pictures? Oh well! Here’s the recipe!
